Conversion Rate: Definition, Formula & Benchmark

Conversion rate is orders divided by sessions. It tells you what share of your visitors actually buy.

Conversion rate is the percentage of store sessions that end in an order. It is calculated by dividing orders by sessions and multiplying by 100. For Shopify and DTC brands, improving conversion can increase revenue from existing traffic without increasing traffic spend, provided order value and margins remain stable.

What is Conversion Rate?

More traffic often means more marketing spend. Raising average order value can also require changes to pricing or product offers. Improving conversion rate gives you another option: generate more orders from the traffic you already have.

The complication is the denominator. Sessions, visitors and users are three different numbers, and published benchmarks use all three. A rate based on unique visitors can differ from one based on sessions. That is why two brands reporting a 2.1% conversion rate may not be directly comparable.

Conversion rates also vary by device. Mobile and desktop performance can differ, but the size of the gap depends on the store and its audience. A change in mobile traffic share can affect the overall rate, even when conversion within each device group stays stable. A retail KPI dashboard helps you compare conversion across devices, channels and landing pages, so you can identify where performance changes and what needs further investigation.

Conversion Rate Formula

  • Conversion Rate = (Sessions With at Least One Purchase ÷ Total Sessions) × 100

A store with 120,000 sessions and 2,400 sessions that included at least one purchase in a month:

  • (2,400 ÷ 120,000) × 100 = 2.0% conversion rate

Choose your denominator and use it consistently. Sessions are the default basis for Shopify store conversion reporting, but make sure any benchmark you use measures conversion the same way. Then segment conversion by device, channel, new versus returning customers, and landing page. The overall rate tells you that performance changed, but not where or why.

SMB/DTC Benchmark

Littledata’s October 2026 benchmark puts the median Shopify store conversion rate at 1.4%. The top 20% convert above 2.7%, while the top 10% convert above 3.6%. These figures come from 433 Shopify stores tracked through Google Analytics 4 over 90 days. Use them as a reference, not a universal target for every ecommerce business.

Treat the 1.4% median as a reference point, not a target. Results vary by category, traffic quality, price point and measurement method. Your category benchmark is a more useful comparison, while your own conversion trend helps show whether performance is improving.

Why is Conversion Rate Important?

A higher conversion rate can increase revenue from existing traffic without a matching increase in traffic spend. If average order value and acquisition spend remain stable, this can improve ROAS and MER while reducing acquisition cost per order.

A sudden drop may point to a checkout issue, slower page speed or a tracking problem. Check these areas before assuming customer demand has weakened.

Read conversion rate alongside average order value and margin. Discounting can lift conversion while reducing profit per order. A store celebrating a jump from 1.8% to 2.4% during a promotion should check whether the extra orders justify the lower margin.

The decision this metric should drive is where to invest in store experience versus more traffic.

Find Out What Is Changing Your Conversion Rate

A change in conversion rate can signal a problem, but the overall number rarely explains what caused it. Breaking conversion down by device, channel and landing page helps you find where performance is changing and what may be causing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the number of sessions that included at least one purchase by total sessions, then multiply by 100. For example, 2,400 purchasing sessions out of 120,000 total sessions gives a 2.0% conversion rate. Keep the measurement method consistent when comparing results.

There is no single conversion rate that is right for every Shopify store. In Littledata’s October 2026 benchmark of 433 stores, the median was 1.4%, while the top 20% converted above 2.7%. Category matters, too: the median was 2.9% for beauty and skincare and 1.1% for fashion and apparel. Compare your store with a relevant category benchmark and track your own trend over time.

Mobile conversion can be lower than desktop conversion, but the gap varies by store, audience and measurement method. Smaller screens, slower connections and different browsing behaviour can all affect results. Track conversion by device to see whether the issue is specific to mobile or reflects a wider change in traffic quality or store performance.

Customer Lifetime Value (LTV): Definition, Formula & Benchmark

Customer lifetime value is the total gross profit an average customer generates over their relationship with your brand. It sets how much you can afford to spend to win them, and which customers deserve your attention. See the formula, an SMB benchmark and how we track it for clients.
