Revenue per channel shows how much sales revenue comes from each marketing or sales channel. It helps SMB and DTC brands see which channels generate the most revenue and where their sales are coming from.

Comparing channel revenue can also reveal which channels deserve more budget, attention or testing. Revenue alone does not tell the full story.

A Channel may generate high sales but have high acquisition costs or low margins, so brands should review channel revenue alongside other sales KPIs.

What is Revenue per Channel?

Revenue per channel is the total revenue attributed to a specific sales or marketing channel during a set period. Common channels include paid search, paid social, organic search, email, direct traffic, affiliates, marketplaces and referrals.

For example, an eCommerce brand may generate:

  • Paid Search: $40,000
  • Paid Social: $25,000
  • Organic Search: $20,000
  • Email: $15,000

This breakdown makes it easier to see where sales are coming from instead of looking only at total revenue.

For DTC brands, channel level revenue can also help compare new customer acquisition with repeat purchases.

Revenue per Channel Formula

Revenue per channel is calculated by adding the revenue attributed to each individual channel during the selected period.

Revenue per Channel  = Total Revenue Attributed to the channel

For example, if paid search generated 800 orders with an average order value of $50:

800 x $50 = $40,000 revenue

The exact attribution method matters. Different analytics platforms may assign revenue to channels using different attribution models, so teams should use a consistent method when comparing performance.

Why is Revenue Per Channel Important?

Revenue per channel helps businesses understand which channels contribute most to overall sales. It can support budget decisions, campaign planning and sales forecasting.

A channel comparison can help answer questions such as:

  • Which channel generates the most revenue?
  • Which channels are growing?
  • Where are customers making purchases?
  • Which channel has the highest AOV?
  • Is revenue too dependent on one channel?
  • Which channels should receive more testing or investment?

Revenue per channel becomes more useful when paired with metrics such as AOV, conversion rate, CAC, ROAS and gross margin.

For example, a paid channel may produce $50,000 in revenue but cost $20,000 to acquire that revenue. Another channel may produce $35,000 with much lower costs. Looking at revenue alone would miss this difference.

SMB/DTC Benchmark

There is no universal revenue per channel benchmark for SMB or DTC businesses. Revenue depends on the product category, business size, customer base, pricing, traffic sources and marketing mix.

Instead of comparing your revenue with a generic industry number, track your own channel performance over time. Useful comparisons include:

  • Channel revenue month over month
  • Revenue share by channel
  • New customer revenue by channel
  • Returning customers revenue by channel
  • AOV by channel
  • CAC and ROAS by channel
  • Revenue against gross margin

For growing DTC brands, one useful goal is to understand whether revenue growth comes from a healthy mix of channels or from heavy dependence on one source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Channel revenue numbers can differ because platforms use different attribution models, tracking methods, reporting windows and definitions of revenue. Use one consistent source and attribution method when comparing channels.

Review revenue per channel at least weekly for active eCommerce businesses. Monthly reviews can help identify longer term trends, while daily checks are useful during major campaigns or sales periods.

A sales dashboard eCommerce report brings channel revenue, orders, AOV and other sales KPIs into one view. This makes it easier to compare channels and spot changes in performance.
